Project Pirate Animation

In this studio session we created a character in Adobe Illustrator and then we exported the character to Adobe After Effects so it could be animated. The point of this exercise was to introduce us to animating a character and to also teach us about exporting work between software.

Pirate Animation Project from Sam Hepworth on Vimeo.

My very simple character of a pirate created in Illustrator was exported to After Effects so I could make him march across the screen.

I am happy with my creation of a marching pirate because it was only my second time using Illustartor and After effects, even though it is simple you can tell it is a pirate and from his motion you can tell the movement mimics marching.

The session has left me feeling that I have improved my skill and have a better understanding of the basics when using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects. I have learnt how to form shapes together on Illustrator to create objects and also how to use the basic mechanics and features in After Effects to animate an object.

If I had more time during the session or if I came to do this excercise again I would definitley make my character better and experimented more to make his movement more realistic.

In the future I am going to practice this technique to create better animations and I will consider it as a possible option for future projects that include animating.

Abstracts

What is an abstract?
It is an overview of something that has been cut down into one paragraph containing 10-20 sentences.

What is the point of an abstract?
An abstract helps people plan something their going to do or summarise something they have already done.

Why Is it important for me?
It will help me in a huge way when I need to plan something or make a proposal for a project instead of diving straight into the work without thinking about it first. It will also help me write my essays because again it prevents me from diving straight in and not thinking about it first.

Abstract Practice - Star Wars
Jedi are people and aliens who worship the force of the galaxy and use it to protect the innocent within it. In the beginning there were just the Jedi but along the way some Jedi Knights discovered a new way in seeing and using the force known as the dark side. Jedi disagreed with this new way and found it evil initiating a civil between the Jedi and the dark Jedi. The dark Jedi eventually came up for a new name for themselves called the Sith and were supposedly wiped out by the Jedi. The Jedi joined and agreed to help the republic with their war against the federation (a group of people/aliens who want to take over and wipe out the republic to rule at their own will). Through the midst of the war the Jedi discover that the Sith still exist and that a young boy named Anakin Skywalker is the chosen one who is supposed to wipe out the Sith for good. As Anakin gets older he falls for a princess called Padme well knowing that Jedi are forbidden to love and are banished for doing so. Eventually Anakin has visions of his new wife dying in child birth which concerns him so he promises to do everything in his power to prevent it. The chancellor of the republic named Palpatine tells Anakin that there is an ability that could save his wife from death but involves learning the ways of the darks side of the force and from this Anakin learns that chancellor Palpatine is actually the dark lord of the Sith the Jedi have being looking for. Chancellor Palpatine known as the Sith lord Darth Sidious uses Anakin's Wife's tragic future to manipulate him to joining the dark side and help wipe out the Jedi. Now with the help of the confused Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker now known as Darth Vader, Darth Sidious issues order 66 which is a message to the the soldiers of the Republic that the Jedi are traitors and need to be executed which does basically wipe out all of the Jedi. Anakin Skywalker's master Obi Wan Kenobi travels to the planet of Mustafar (a planet made up of molten lava) where he confronts his apprentice who has fallen to the darkside, the battle ends up with Obi Wan cutting off the legs of Anakin and leaves him to burn to death. Obi Wan and the leader of the once Jedi council master Yoda help deliver Anakin's children from his wife Padme who does die in child birth after giving birth to twins a boy named Luke and a girl named Leia. In the meantime Anakin is saved by his new master Darth Sidious and is rebuilt into the android Darth Vader who now blames and hates the Jedi for his wife's death promising to wipe the rest out. While Obi Wan and Yoda go into hiding and Luke and Leia grow up, Lord Vader travels the galaxy hunting down rogue Jedi who have also gone into hiding slaughtering them from existence. During this time Darth Sidious has created an Empire who plan to rule the galaxy and has made his self the emperor while people/aliens have formed a rebellion to prevent this empire from taking over. Eventually Luke and Leia get tied up in the war between the Empire and the Rebels especially Leia who was adopted by the leader of the Rebels anyway. Luke joins the Rebel army making his way to the Death Star (a massive space station that has the power to destroy planets) to confront his father Darth Vader and the Emperor Darth Sidious. Thanks to Obi Wan and master Yoda's training Luke defeats Darth Vader and finally becomes a Jedi but then is tortured by Darth Sidious which Luke's father can't stand to see so he throws his master over a balcony killing him, thus Anakin Skywalker finally fulfilling the prophesy of him defeating the Sith good. Shortly after Darth Vader dies of his wounds leaving the Rebels victorious and the galaxy safe.

Drawing In Huddersfield

In this task we ventured out into Huddersfield to draw and sketch different places and its daily life. The point of this excercise was to improve our skills with realism sketching and to experiment with different drawing styles and techniques.

This first drawing is a light sketch from the first location. The drawing focuses on my skill to draw something at a diagonal perspective and it is of a high street that is sheltered by a sky light. The angle I chose to draw this I did struggle with because I couldn't quite visualise where the lines that create the tunnel illusion effect went on my page, so the drawing as a whole looks like it was drawn from a birds eye view. For improvements I would seriously workout about the line structure of the drawing before proceeding.

This drawing was drawn in the second location and I chose to draw the butchers shop there. The drawing is darker than the first sketch and includes more detail. The drawing is rough around the edges but I am happy with including detail that is happening inside the shop. For improvements on this drawing I would make it more clean than rough.

This drawing was drawn in the third and final location and it was of the Mcdonalds with old buildings that sit above it. I believe this is my best drawing out of the 3 because I feel I got the perspective right and I included lots of detail.

I didn't experiment with different drawing techniques in this session I just did 3 pencil sketches but next time I will definitley experimet in three other techniques and ignore sketching with a pencil.

I have never really sat down and drawn something that is infront of me before so I feel I have learnt and improved my skill in realism drawing.

In the future when I come to animating I know I will use this technique for creating a refernce when I need to recreate a place for the animation.

Indesign Recreating Double Page Spreads

In this task I took the work and techniques of an existing double page spread from a magazine and applied them to my own double page spread I created in Adobe Indesign. The task overall was to improve our skills with the software Adobe Indesign and teach us the basics.

This image of the band ONE OK ROCK is presented in the colour mode RGB part of my experimentation with colour modes.

This image of the band ONE OK ROCK is presented in the colour mode CMYK part of my experimentation with colour modes.

This image of the band ONE OK ROCK is presented in the colour mode Grayscale part of my experimentation with colour modes.

                                                 Double Page Spread 1

                                                 My Version

Using the techniques from the above double page spread I created a double page spread on the band ONE OK ROCK. The image and the layout of the text I believe is very well done and I am happy with the final piece. If I came back to this excercise I would concentrate more with filling the white blanks around the poster to make it feel my lifely.

                                               Double Page Spread 2

                                                 My Version

On this double page spread the main techniques to master was making text follow a path and to convert an image within a text box. I replaced the rat with a snake and called the spread 'Snake Rock'. I was comfortable performing both of these techniques and didn't have any real problems.

I am happy with everything I have done in this excersise because it is only the second time I have used Indesign and the progress of my skill is increasing smoothly. I have learnt how to place, edit and manipulate text while importing images to a double page spread.

Indesign Recreating Posters

In this session we recreated existing posters using the software Adobe Indesign. The point of this excercise was an introduction to Indesign and its basic tools.

                Poster 1                                                                      My Version

This was my first time using Indesign and I am very happy with this attempt to recreate an existing poster. From the images it is evident that they are not absolutely identical and this was because I ran into some slight problems with positioning of the text and shapes, it seemed as though I had a bigger area on the page compared to the original poster. However overall I feel that this first poster was a huge success.

              Poster 2                                                                         My Version

This attempt of recreating a poster was a success in most areas. Visibly I didn't include the text of the poster, again this was because I ran into the problem of space and I made the poster overall too big for my page. Also some of the shapes are not close to identical as the original poster but I had a good attempt to recreate them. The parallelogram eventually became a parallelogram from a rectangle when I got the hang of it but copying the scale I struggled with. The black arch ways I really struggled with, I knew where to begin to get the line to bend but when it came to creating its final image I couldn't control the drawing of the bend. The final shape I struggled with was the wiggly line, I figured out how to bend the lines but again couldn't control it to create the final shape. Besides that I am happy overall with my attempt as it looks very similar.

I am confident with using the basics of Indesign and I have learnt how to place text, how to create shapes, how to manipulate those shapes and how to create a background with a gradient of colours.

In the future I feel I will use Indesign to experiment with different styles of typography for my projects and use it to create various posters.

Project Lord Of The Flies

In this studio session we had the task of choosing a book and then summarising the story in a short slide show in Adobe After Effects using a number of images. The point of this exercise was to introduce us to After effects and how it works.

Project Lord Of The Flies (Low Res) from Sam Hepworth on Vimeo.

I am proud of the work I have produced for this project as it was the first time I have used After Effects and I managed to also include a little bit of animation aswell as the slide show itself. I feel that I included the main points of the novel's story which are that a group of children was in a plane crash and then are stranded on a desert island.

The ending could have been better, I was pushed for time so I ended it with 'There Is Hope'. I was hoping for something different because I feel as though the ending should have been something unique to the rest of the slideshow that way that signifies the ending.

The session has taught me what After Effects is and what it can be used for aswell as the very basics of how to use it. I think I will be using After Effects alot more in my future work and projects as it can be used to animate.

Principles Of Animation

The 12 principles of animation was created by two Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. The animators published a book in 1981 named 'The Illusion Of Life: Disney Animation' which introduced these principles. The 12 principles are 12 techniques that teach animators how to make movement seem realistic within a project.

1. Squash And Stretch - Creates the illusion of weight and volume to an object.

2. Anticipation - When something happens that builds tension and shows the audience that something major is going to happen.

3. Arcs - Living beings and creatures always move in arcs. Arcs are a form of path objects follow.

4. Ease In & Ease Out - The movement of an object that shows that it is speeding up or slowing down.

5. Appeal - Objects mainly characters have to have a distinct look and personality for the audience to connect and get a feel for them.

6. Time - More frames in a animation means it will run more smoothly and slower, while having less frames will make the animation jump and play faster.

7. Solid Drawing - Weight and volume is added to objects to create a 3D illusion that makes the object seem more real.

8. Exaggeration - To make animations seem more comical and entertaining exaggeration is applied to characters and their actions.

9. Pose To Pose - This is a technique for creating a scene. Animators draw the key frames (important frames) in a scene and then fill in the detail in between these frames later.

10. Staging -  A specific scene gets a clear overview of the primary mood and its setting.

11.  Secondary Action - Other actions and movements happen around the main action and movement of the main subject to create the feel of realism.

12. Follow Through - An action continues or another action begins after the main action and movement of an object ends to show aftermath.

After researching and studying the principles of animation I now feel I have a more clear understanding of how I will go about making animations in the future.

Structure Of Communication

Any project that involves some sort of design or animation has some sort of message for the audience to take in. The 'message' is information that is transmitted from one person to another and the 'meaning' is the source of the message that the person is trying to express to another. The job as an animator is called the encoder which means translating information into a form of message using shapes and symbols. A good way to do this is to mentally visualise the communication from the receivers point of view. The sender should ask themselves different questions: Is the message urgent? Is the message being communicated to someone outside or inside? After these types of questions have been answered the sender can then choose a channel to use.

Expanded Genealogy

Genealogy isn't just about exploring theories its about making inquiries. Don't take a couple of ideas and refuse to move topics explore every corner of a subject even if it seems pointless. Having everything down on paper could reveal an amazing idea that might not have been obvious if everything wasn't covered. A genealogical method is someones personal routine when they come to researching a topic and coming up with ideas, something that works for them. Like TV shows and cartoon introductions they answer the audiences questions: Where is the cartoon set? What does this place look like? What is the tone for this cartoon? These questions also need to be answered with found research. Answering these questions helps people to unravel their theories and inquiries to give their concept meaning.

Definitions

  • Methodology - Means a specific way of doing something and how its done.
  • Objective - Means a number of tasks that need to be complete to get from A to B.
  • Contingency - Means something in the future that is possible but not certain. Like an idea.
  • History - Means something that happened in the past. Like a previous idea.
  • Subjected - Means something that forms a idea or investigation.
  • Fabrication - Means to make or create something like an idea.
  • Establishing Shots - Means the first shot of a scene that is supposed to introduce everything to the audience e.g. characters, where it takes place etc.
  • Perspective - Means the way someone sees something like their idea.
  • Pre Conceived - Means something that has already being created.
The Seminar has given me more of a clear understanding of where ideas are genreated from, where I should start for ideas and how I should go about with ideas.

Typography

In this seminar we developed and practiced our typography skills. Each person was given 3 different letters from the alphabet and was tasked to come up with 2 new designs for each of those letters. The point of this task was to get us to be creative when coming up with new typography and to get us to realise that different styles of letters has a huge impact on an audience when a message is being delivered.

I was given 'U' 'V' and 'W' to work with and above is what I came up with. My favourite design I came up with was the 'W' on the bottom left because it reminds me of something that hasn't been attended to for years and now it is covered in overgrown wildlife and it looks very good. The other designs on the other hand I don't think are very good and at the same time are similar to each other. If I did this exercise again I would definitely make it my main priority to make each design unique in its own way.

Here everyone put their new designed letters on one table and above is what they came up with.

I have learnt that typography can be and is important when it comes to creating any type of poster or front cover, anything that involves selling a product or passing a message on to an audience. The next time I make any kind of poster or something similar I will be sure to take extra care in the typography and use that to do up the poster as well as the other information that generally goes below it.

Convergence

In this seminar I learnt about convergence: taking two objects that are old or two objects that would never go together and turning it into something new. An example of this is taking children's toys that make sound and alternating their wiring to make them sound completely different and then play sounds simultaneously to create music. What happened here was people took something that worked completely fine but changed it anyway so it has a different use.

Here is an example of convergence: somebody decided to cut out words from a magazine and put them together to form a poem. Taking something that already has a purpose and transforming it into something else giving it another purpose.

Research

In this seminar I learnt what the point of research is and why I should research. Research helps someone expand their knowledge of the world and helps them to express in their passions and interests. I should research because it will help me develop my skills in the things I am interested in and passionate about. The task we got given was to make us realise that without research you don't know where to start and it is almost impossible to get an answer. We got into pairs and played 20 questions but instead of the normal rules where one can ask questions as they go we had to write down all our questions before we began. Normally people can expand on their questions asked depending on the answer they got on the last question allowing them to ask the right questions to find out what the object is, this is the research part of the exercise. Because we already wrote the questions down and couldn't follow up on the last answer, the information we received was random and all over the place. This represents what would happen if we started a project without any research, we would never get a accurate answer.

Without research a lot more mistakes would be made if its designing a poster or making an animation, it helps us pre plan and perfect our work.

Genealogy

In this task we got into groups of 4 and was given a scenario that was different in the world and our scenario was 'What if there was such things as holograms?' From this we had to come up with ideas of what would be different in the world. The point of this task was to realise that it is best to think about all aspects of a scenario and come up with tons of ideas because the best idea might not be that obvious if you only skim over a subject.

Our group came up with some clever alternatives to the world if holograms were real and I feel that we covered just about everything holograms would affect.

This excercise has helped me realise that I might not go into as much detail as I think when I think about an idea and I really should explore more round an idea becasue it may not be what it seems or there could be a better one.

My Creative Process

For this task we had to express our creative process through text and drawings and because I did it on A3 paper I have separated the photos into 4 sections one for each process. The point of this project was to help us realise that we all have some sort of method when it comes to thinking about ideas and make that method become more clear to us.

This is the first part of my process because I am an animator it signifies that I get my ideas from the world in general, everyday when I go outside anywhere I am seeing movement all the time which helps me when it comes to making animations because I have seen the movement before its just the case of copying it to software.

This is the second part of my creative process and it represents the time I use after I get my idea. This time is spent in a place where I can work and experiment with my idea, mainly in my bedroom but in general just a quiet place that I am comfortable in.

This is the third part of my creative process and it is showing that I can use the internet for additional inspiration and information for the idea I already have to expand on it.

This is the fourth and final part of my creative process and it is just something that reminds me that no one generates ideas on the spot and everything comes from somewhere. This ultimately motivates me to research and find inspiration for ideas.

The excercise has made me realise that I use the same method when i come up with ideas and i should ise it more.

History Of Animation

Emile Renaud (1892)
Emile was a French inventor who was responsible for the first animated cartoon. He invented the Praxinoscope and then used it to project his first animated film to a public audience in 1892.

George Melies (1902)
George was a french illusionist and film maker and was famous for his films in the early stages of cinema. Through special features he was the first one to use multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves and hand-painted colour in his films. He made the film 'A Trip To The Moon' in 1902.

Emile Cohl (1908)

Emile was a french cartoonist and animator and he is known for the first hand drawn animation. The animation was drawn on paper but from the film it looks like it was made on a blackboard, this effect comes from shooting the 700 drawings on to negative film.

Winsor McCay (1914)
Winsor was a American cartoonist who created a hand drawn animation called Gertie the Dinosaur and at the end of the animation Winsor would walk behind the projector screen create the illusion where he would climb on the cartoon dinosaur and ride it off the screen. This was the first example of crossing real life footage with animated footage.

Walt Disney (1928)
5 years before, Disney started their studio in Los Angeles and Steam Boat Willie was their first major breakthrough in the animation Industry. This was also the first appearance of Disney's iconic character Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney (1937)

Disney's first hand drawn feature length movie Snow White was the first animation that became a full length movie.

Robert Zemeckis (1988)
Robert directed the first movie to ever feature animation and real life footage together throughout the whole of the movie. The movie was called Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?

Nick Park (1989)
Nick created a great example of a stop motion short movie made out of clay called Wallace and Gromit.

Pixar (1995)
Pixar was one of the first companies to create a full length animated movies that used CGI and was 3D.

What I have Learnt About Animation?
Animation can be presented in a number of ways:

Paper animation
Objects drawn on or are cut out using paper are then photographed so the pictures can be put in subsequent order to be played as an animation.

https://youtu.be/Hpc2E5GAupI

Claymation
This is very similar to paper animation. Objects and characters are made out of clay and then are photographed so the pictures can again be put in subsequent order to be played as an animation.

2D Digital Animation
This is specifically 2 dimensional animation that is drawn and animated using a computer.
